Which is the best route to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro Routes

There are seven established Mount Kilimanjaro routes which lead to the summit, Uhuru Peak, one of which starts on the Northern side of the mountain and the rest on the Southern side. They are:

Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s newest and most remote route, offering the highest success rate and best acclimatization profile

Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering stunning panoramic views and a quieter trekking experience.

Shira Route

The Shira Route is one of the most scenic paths on Mount Kilimanjaro. It starts on the Shira Plateau at a higher elevation, offering panoramic views from the beginning. This route is ideal for experienced trekkers or those already acclimatized, as the initial altitude is demanding.

Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is known as the most direct and steepest path up Kilimanjaro, making it the toughest route for summit attempts. This trail is recommended only for experienced climbers and those comfortable with rapid altitude gain.

Machame Route (“Whiskey” Route)

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is the most popular trail on Kilimanjaro. It offers stunning scenery, a challenging but rewarding climb, and a high summit success rate due to its excellent acclimatization profile.

Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It offers a quieter climb, gentle slopes, and a high success rate, making it ideal for trekkers who prefer less crowded routes and a gradual ascent.

Marangu Route (“Coca-Cola” Route)

The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most popular trail. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only route offering hut accommodation instead of tents. With a gentle gradient and a direct path, it’s considered the easiest route for beginners—though it has a lower success rate due to a faster ascent.
